Technique
This page is all about the basic techniques for using you Virus boat. Of course these techniques apply to most sculling boats [or skulling as some people like to write ;) ].
Learning to Row
Urs has put together a short primer on what it takes to get started rowing. Just the basics of how to get in the boat, hold the oars, and pull.

How to re-enter your boat if you dump

![]() If the boat is turned over all the way, it will right itself by pushing down on the rigger arm closest to you. Push down with your hand, or for more force use your foot. Reach over for the opposite rigger as it rolls towards you and pull it to you until the boat is upright. |
![]() Turn the bow into the wind. Move to the bow side of the rigger. Face the stern part of the cockpit, where the seat is to be positioned. Position the oar close to you properly in the oarlock, perpendicular to the boat, blade parallel (feathered) with the water. Take the oar grip in hand closest to the oar and swim your body up onto the boat. Take the other oar grip in hand and position the oar again perpendicular to the boat in feathered position. |
![]() Now take both grips with one and the same hand and swim you body the rest of the way up onto the boat. |
![]() Maneuver yourself into the seat, while maintaining a grip on the oars in one hand. The grip on both oars in one hand is your stability. Store all carryon items in hull compartment. The Virus Boat will float in rolled-over position. The Virus Boat will bail itself almost completely with the first strokes after a roll over. |
